Scripture Union and Scottish Bible Society

The mission of the Scottish Bible Society is to provide God's Word to all people,

in a language they can understand,
in a format they can use,
and at a price they can afford.

The Society distributes Bibles, New Testaments and other Scripture-based materials, in a range of media, in Scotland and throughout the world.

Working with the churches, Scripture Union aims to make God's news known to children, young people and families and to encourage people of all ages to meet God daily through the Bible and prayer.

Other Things We Do

Child Protection Coordinator Contact: Session Clerk

To provide protection for the young children within the church and to encourage safe practice. All people who work with, or are responsible for, children are trained and registered.

Maintaining this register of local workers and checking the accuracy of its content is the responsibility of the coordinator. Any difficulties are reported to the Minister and Session Clerk and dealt with according to procedures established by the Church of Scotland.

Flowers

Contact: Marjory Goldsmith

The fresh flowers arranged for each Sunday service are donated by one or more of our members, often on a date special to them.

At the end of the service the flowers are delivered to folk in Haddington to let them know that we are thinking of them at a particularly difficult or happy time in their lives.

If you would like to help or donate on a special Sunday, perhaps sharing with another, we would like to hear from you.

Life and Work

Contact: Isobel Brown

The magazine historically looked at issues pertaining to the Church. In recent months, there has been a change of emphasis to include controversial issues e.g. cloning and, as a consequence, it is enjoying a higher profile. There are 12 copies of Life & Work published each year. Please contact Isobel Brown to order copies or to have a preview to decide if you would like to subscribe.

Prayer Secretary

Contact: Charlotte Crawford

“Do not be anxious about anything but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving present your request to God” (Phil 4 v6)
The prayer secretary’s role is to share the responsibility for the promotion and development of prayer within the congregation and to this aim we have held a prayer workshop and half nights of prayer.

Morning prayer meetings are twice weekly in the church - Tuesday 8am-9am and Friday 7am-8am - and are open to all who would like to come along.

Should you require prayer for yourself or for someone else please make use of the prayer box in the church or contact me by phone.

World Mission Representative Contact: TBA

World Mission is more than just a phrase. It’s about global connections, it’s about two-way traffic, sharing Christ and learning from each other, it’s about being involved and it’s about partnership. The Church of Scotland has many contacts and partnerships with churches around the world. In Haddington West alone we have friends in Brazil, Zambia, Israel and Malawi.

Board of Social Responsibility. Congregational Contact: TBA

The Board is the largest voluntary social work agency in Scotland and through its congregational contacts maintains a link between the board and local churches. The Board’s newspaper the “Circle of Care” is available from the church.

Communications Officer

Contact: Mark Waugh

Our many varied methods of communicating within the West Church and to the wider community is co-ordinated by our Communications Officer. Any information that you wish to have included in the weekly intimation sheet should be supplied to him by Tuesday in order that these can all be forwarded to Sheila Lyall who kindly completes the Order of Service and Intimations every week.

Local papers are regularly supplied with relevant information relating to events and information from any meetings that are taking place and which create local interest in the area. Any material that can be included in the Newspaper Article would be appreciated. Please endeavour to support this very important work.
