Scripture Union and Scottish Bible Society

The mission of the Scottish Bible Society is to provide God's Word to all people,

in a language they can understand,
in a format they can use,
and at a price they can afford.

The Society distributes Bibles, New Testaments and other Scripture-based materials, in a range of media, in Scotland and throughout the world.

Working with the churches, Scripture Union aims to make God's news known to children, young people and families and to encourage people of all ages to meet God daily through the Bible and prayer.

Congregational Board

Areas of Responsibility

The Congregational Board has responsibility for the financial management of the West Church and the maintenance of the property. The manse is the joint responsibility of the West Church Congregational Board and the Kirk Session of Garvald and Morham. Costs for this and other joint responsibilities, such as the Minister’s Stipend, are split on a pro rata basis of 80% and 20%.

In simple terms, the Board deals with material matters; the Kirk Session with spiritual matters.

The Board is responsible for setting the annual budget, which is agreed in December and presents the accounts to the Annual Congregational Meeting held each March. This meeting provides an opportunity for members to seek information on the Church’s accounts and the financial affairs of the Church generally.

Method of Working

The full Congregational Board meets five times a year, on the first Tuesday of February, April, June, October and December. In the West Church the custom has been for the meetings to be chaired by the Minister.
